Akshath Prabhakar’s Journey to the BCCI Under-19 Vinoo Mankad Trophy – A Physiotherapist’s Perspective
As a sports physiotherapist, I’ve seen firsthand the immense toll that injuries can take on an athlete’s career, particularly during their formative years. Akshath Prabhakar, a young and talented cricketer, faced such a challenge. His recurrent low back injuries had the potential to derail his promising career, but with the right rehabilitation approach, he was able to overcome these setbacks and reach new heights in his sport. Today, I’m proud to share his remarkable journey as he stands among Karnataka’s representatives in the BCCI Under-19 Vinoo Mankad Trophy for the 2024-25 season.

The Challenge: Recurrent Low Back Injuries
Akshath’s injury story began with recurrent low back pain, a common issue in cricketers. The repetitive nature of bowling, batting, and fielding places significant stress on the spine and surrounding muscles. For Akshath, these injuries severely hampered his performance, making it difficult for him to train and play at the elite level required for competitive cricket.
When Akshath came to BSI Physiotherapy, he knew his career was at a crossroads. I could see the frustration in his eyes, knowing that his dream of representing Karnataka was slipping away. His condition was serious, but I knew that with a strategic and personalised approach to rehabilitation, we could help him recover and come back stronger.
The Solution: A Tailored Rehabilitation Plan
At BSI Physiotherapy, we believe in addressing not just the symptoms but also the root causes of an injury. Akshath’s rehabilitation plan was built around his specific needs as an athlete. We started with a thorough assessment of his biomechanics, focusing on areas of weakness and instability that could be contributing to his low back issues.
The rehabilitation process involved a combination of manual therapy, core strengthening, mobility exercises, and posture correction techniques. A key component of the program was enhancing Akshath’s core stability, particularly in his lower back, to reduce the stress on his spine during intense physical activity. We also worked on improving his flexibility and range of motion, ensuring that his body was better equipped to handle the demands of cricket.
With every session, I could see Akshath gaining more confidence in his body. He was dedicated to the process, and his determination played a crucial role in his recovery. It wasn’t just about getting him back on the field; it was about preparing him to perform at his best, injury-free.
The Comeback: Representing Karnataka
After months of hard work and commitment, Akshath made his return to cricket. I’ll never forget the moment he shared the news that he had been selected to represent Karnataka in the BCCI Under-19 Vinoo Mankad Trophy. It was a proud moment not only for him but for everyone at BSI Physiotherapy who had supported him along the way.
His comeback is a testament to his resilience, but also to the importance of a well-structured physiotherapy program. Injuries can be daunting, especially for young athletes, but Akshath’s journey proves that with the right guidance and a tailored approach to recovery, athletes can not only return to their sport but also excel beyond their previous limits.
The Road Ahead
As Akshath competes in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, his story serves as a reminder to all athletes facing similar challenges. Injuries are a part of sports, but they don’t have to define an athlete’s future. With expert care and a relentless work ethic, recovery is always possible.
At BSI Physiotherapy, we remain committed to helping athletes like Akshath achieve their goals, providing them with the tools they need to overcome injuries and reach their full potential. His success is a source of inspiration for us, and I am confident that he will continue to shine on the field in the years to come.
